Our Story & Mission
Since 2013, we've been dedicated to bringing modern education to rural Afghanistan.
The Foundation's History
Education Foundation for Afghanistan, Inc. (EFA) was founded in 2013 and registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the State of Indiana. Our founder, Zarjon Baha, recognized that sustainable change in Afghanistan could only come through education.
The education system in Afghanistan has a complex history. King Amanullah introduced modern education in 1919, but progress was disrupted by the Soviet invasion in 1980 and the civil war of the 1990s. After 2001, with support from the international community, the education system experienced remarkable growth—reaching 17,482 schools and 9.2 million students by 2017.
Despite this progress, rural areas remain underserved. In Wardag province, where we focus our efforts, many schools lack basic resources like computers, libraries, and reliable electricity. EFA was created to fill this gap.
