In 2017, Education Foundation for Afghanistan achieved a milestone that seemed impossible just a few years earlier: we opened the first computer lab in Wardag Province.
Omar Walee School in Saidabad District became home to 15 brand-new computers, powered entirely by solar energy. For the students here, this wasn't just a new classroom—it was a window to the world.
Many of these students had never touched a computer before. They had heard of the internet, seen phones in the hands of visitors, but the concept of a personal computer was entirely foreign. When the lab opened, we watched as students tentatively approached the machines, their eyes wide with a mixture of curiosity and uncertainty.
The transformation was remarkable. Within weeks, students who had been hesitant were eagerly learning basic computer skills. They discovered how to type, how to search for information, and how to use educational software that brought their textbook lessons to life.
But the impact went beyond just learning to use computers. The lab became a symbol of possibility. Parents who had been skeptical about the value of modern education began to see its potential. Teachers gained new tools to enhance their lessons. And students began to dream bigger dreams.
One student, Ahmad, told us: "Before, I thought my future was only in the fields. Now I know I can learn anything. I can become anything."
The solar power system ensures the lab operates reliably, even in an area where grid electricity is inconsistent at best. This sustainability was crucial—we weren't just installing computers, we were building infrastructure that would serve the community for years to come.
The success of this first lab has fueled our ambition to expand. We've seen what's possible when we invest in education infrastructure, and we're committed to bringing this opportunity to more schools across Wardag Province.
